Call for Papers (now due by 7/31/12)--Windy City History Conference
"The University of Illinois at Chicago History Graduate Society announces the fifth annual Windy City Graduate Student History Conference: Navigating New Worlds: Contact, Conflict, and Conquest in the Modern Era. This event will take place at UIC on Saturday, October 13, 2012.
http://www.h-net.org/announce/show.cgi?ID=193177
History has been shaped by complex interactions between previously separate individuals and groups. Historians trace the ramifications of these discrete or long-term moments of contact, conflict, and conquest across geographic and social boundaries, and through time, thereby enhancing our understanding of human histories as well as the world that we inhabit today. We are interested in examining the ways in which historical actors responded to new interactions across geographic, spatial, political, social, cultural, and intellectual boundaries. By bringing together scholars exploring wide-ranging themes such as race and ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality, science and technology, material culture, politics, and empire, we hope to engage in productive discussions about how we study and understand the messy interactions that drive historical change.
Submissions for panels or individual papers are welcomed from graduate students at all levels and advanced undergraduates. We welcome scholars whose work focuses on any region or field in modern history (roughly 1500 – present). Please send a 250-word abstract and short curriculum vitae (no more than two pages) to windy.city.con@gmail.com by April 30, 2012 July 31, 2012. For panel proposals, please send a 200-word panel abstract along with paper abstracts and presenters' CVs."

Description:
This tour will focus on Turner Hall and its immediate environs. Turner Hall was constructed in 1882 and inaugurated in 1883. One of Milwaukee’s oldest civic organizations, the Milwaukee Turners have their origins in the Turnverein movement, which was founded in Germany in the early nineteenth century. The building currently contains one of the oldest working gymnasiums in the United States as well as restaurant space and a large, active ballroom/concert hall. Milwaukee’s Turner Hall was an important source of support and mobilization for Milwaukee’s socialist political movement. All three of Milwaukee’s socialist mayors were Turners: Emil Seidel, Daniel Hoan, and Frank P. Zeidler. The tour will cover the period between the early nineteenth century and the present, with a focus on connections between Turner Hall and the history of revolution and reform, including events such as the Revolutions of 1848, the US Civil
War, the great strikes of 1886, the elections of 1910, World War I, and the election of Frank P. Zeidler as the most recent socialist mayor of Milwaukee in 1948.

People's Books Cooperative Birthday Party--Thursday, 6/21 @ 5 p.m.
Message from the People's Books Cooperative:
"Help us celebrate our move to Riverwest and our fifth birthday! Thursday, June 21st, 5pm, Riverwest Public House (please share)
Please join us at a very important event, as we celebrate five years existing as a cooperative! We are also celebrating our move to the
Riverwest neighborhood, opening at our new location at 804 E. Center St in July! Help make this event a success, and ensure that we continue to thrive for many years to come. This event is free and open to the public (although donations are welcome).
The festivities will begin at 5pm on Thursday, June 21st, at the Riverwest Public House (815 E. Locust Street, Milwaukee), a community-owned and democratically-run cooperative bar.
We will kick off the evening with musical entertainment by acclaimed instrumentalist, composer, and instructor, Michael Bootzin, who will play classical acoustic guitar as we arrive and mingle. Michael's performances are quite enjoyable and not to be missed.
After Michael's performance we are honored to be joined by a very special guest, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, who is the Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. Christine will speak about the challenges facing Wisconsin working class communities in the wake of the recalls, and the work that Voces is engaged in to help build a grassroots movement for change. Christine, along with countless members of Voces de la Frontera (and their political wing Voces de la Frontera Action), has been involved in nearly
every aspect of the Wisconsin uprising over the last year, from marching and civil disobedience to filing lawsuits and collecting recall signatures. Most recently, Voces de la Frontera has played a central role in the unfolding strike at the Palermo's Pizza factory in Milwaukee's Menominee river valley.
After Christine's program the fun will continue with the eclectic gypsy-blues/folk/bluegrass band River Water Tribe. People's members and volunteers may remember vocalist/guitarist Jacob Green from his time as a People's volunteer and regular contributor at our monthly open mics.
Throughout the evening guests will enjoy complimentary food catered by the Riverwest Co-op Cafe, vegan birthday cake by Compassionate Cakes, books & posters for sale, as well as a raffle and a silent-auction on artwork by People's volunteers and community members.
Special thanks to all of the local businesses who have offered up items for our raffle, including Riverwest Co-Op Grocery & Cafe, Fischberger's Variety, Truly Spoken Cycles, Fuel Cafe, Sparrow Collective, UWM Planetarium, Roast Coffee Company and Riverwest Yogashala, and the Tool Shed. I hope I didn't leave anybody out. Of course we will have some unique items provided by our
own cooperative members and volunteers.
Finally, very, very, extra special thanks to all of the sponsors of this event! Without you all this could not be possible.

Message from Alliance of History Graduate Students
Message from John Terry of the Alliance of History Graduate Students:
"Hello grad students,
The Alliance of History Graduate Students has booked the Wisconsin room for 4:00 on Tuesday, April 24. We are wondering if anyone is interested in presenting any work or research. Our intention is to give students who haven't done many (or any) conferences a chance to put a line on their CV and get comfortable with presenting in front of a friendly crowd. If we get some responses we can plan from there, if not we can try find another way to use the room (we are open to suggestions). If anyone has a paper they could present or is interested at all please email John Terry (jrterry@uwm.edu) as soon as you can. Thank you!

"Pre-Occupy" Symposium, Friday, 4/13 @ 1:30pm
Friday, April 13 1:30 pm, Curtin 175
"Our Pre-Occupy symposium addresses how earlier occupations and protests in California (particularly surrounding Oscar Grant and the University of California) and in Wisconsin (especially the occupation of the state capitol) set the stage for the current occupations across the globe. Such pre-occupations, we would contend, acted as forms of pre-acceleration or incipient movement without which Occupy Wall Street may never have happened."

Special Opportunity for Grad Students at the OAH/NCPH, April 20
A message regarding a special opportunity for graduate students at the annual meeting of the OAH/NCPH on April 20--
from PhD Student Joe Walzer--jbwalzer AT uwm DOT edu:
RSVP by 4/13/12 to jbwalzer AT uwm DOT edu:
"The OAH Annual Meeting in Milwaukee is fast approaching! There will be many events to attend, but only one social event especially for Graduate Students to socialize and network with their graduate student colleagues - the Graduate Student Reception and Tavern Tour of Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood on Friday, April 20, from 5:00pm-11:00pm.
A significant nineteenth century industrial, German and Polish ethnic neighborhood, Riverwest is today home to many cultural organizations, collectively owned businesses, and large numbers of students – including many history graduate students.
A reception will be held at the meeting hall of the Milwaukee branch of the Polish Falcons of America – a Polish-American social organization that has had a branch in Riverwest for over ninety–five years. Beverages and a meal will be included with your ticket to this reception, highlighting some of the neighborhood’s unique flavors.
After the reception, there will be a walking tour of Riverwest, featuring a couple of the neighborhood’s distinct taverns. Drink purchases will be on your own during this portion of the event.
The deadline for preregistration through the OAH was April 1. This included bus transportation to and from the event. However, we would like to see as many graduate students from Milwaukee there as we can. If you are interested in attending the reception and have your own means of transportation, but were unable to sign up before the deadline, please contact Joe Walzer (jbwalzer AT uwm DOT edu) no later than Friday, April 13. The fee for the reception, without transportation included, will be $10. We need an accurate count for the caterer, so an RSVP to Joe before April 13 is necessary for this portion.
Otherwise, if you are unable to join us for the reception, you are more than welcome to meet us out at the tavern stops at any time. We will be making two stops, listed with rough times below:
Riverwest Public House (8:45-9:45)
815 E. Locust St.
Art Bar (10:00-11:00)
722 E. Burleigh St.

Workshop on CV Writing
April 6th
1:00-2:30 PM
Holton 355
Alliance of History Graduate Students workshop on building one's curriculum vitae
Session lead by PhD candidate Bill Reck
There have now been two sessions on applied teaching methods, well-attended and with interesting exchanges. There will be more sessions in this theme to come, but more immediately AHGS is addressing another item of concern to surveyed membership, how to build experience relevant to one's cv, and how to effectively present it.
Bring your questions, your experiences and your concerns. We'll be meeting at 1:00 in Holton 355, the common room. Hope to see you there Friday.
Regards,
Jacob

Friday, 3/30--Pedagogy Workshop
How Can We Make Teaching Work?
March 30th
1:00-2:30 PM
Holton 190
From Jacob Glicklich-- glickli2 [AT] uwm [DOT] edu:
Thanks to everyone who came to the first installment of the AHGS Pedagogy Workshop, it seemed well attended and useful, both conceptually and hearing from different specific experiences. There was interest at the end of that discussion in continuing this space, and following up more specifically on successful strategies for getting students to talk and bringing multimedia and other tech into the classroom. So that's what we'll be doing this Friday, starting at 1:00 PM. We'll be basing out of a classroom to better explore what's possible inside the teaching speech. I hope that all interested individuals can make it out to this.
The following week will see AHGS start workshops on another topic very popular in the AHGS survey--CV Building. Look for upcoming emails and flyers in early April. If you have a strong interest in being able to attend this or any other workshop write to me with your available times to influence selection of subsequent times.
Regards,
Jacob
