Spring Party (5/11/12)--Alliance of History Graduate Students

"MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!!!  It is that time of the year, time for the AHGS spring party!  This year's party will be held on FRIDAY, MAY 11TH, FROM 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM, at John and Melissa's (2721 N Weil Street, Milwaukee).  The party will be dog and child friendly, with a fenced in back yard.  We will supply the basics (burgers, brats, buns, veggie burgers, potatoes, condiments), you can bring a dish to share if you'd like, we'll have a refrigerator and stove available; the party is BYOB.  We will be sending off our spring graduates and would really like it if faculty showed up to say goodbye to the people you will miss, to say hello to some of newer students you may not have met, and to support the AHGS.  If you have any questions please email us at jrterry@uwm.edu.  We hope to see you there!"

Graduate Research Assistant
(This is an unclassified – student hourly help position)
The Department of Africology is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) needed to assist with research project relating to the Youth and Adult Rites of Passage & Transformation.
SUPERVISING FACULTY: Professor J. Kirk
SALARY: Commensurate with graduate level and experience (This is an unclassified, student hourly help position)
APPOINTMENT PERIOD: June 1 2012 to February 1 2013 (reappointment possible)
PERCENT OF TIME: Approximately 10-15 hours per week
JOB SUMMARY: The research assistant’s primary duties will include 1) literature/media review 2) compiling an annotated bibliography 3) organize Rites of Passage (ROP) data electronically 4) transcribe video interviews with ROP alumni and transfer VHS to DVD’s  5) assist with identifying relevant persons and scheduling interviews  6) assist with planning ROP alumni conference 7) assist with grant application for ROP conference.
OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS: Must be a graduate student with a BA or MA or relevant experience and/or training in African, African American and diaspora studies, cross-cultural studies, urban studies, sociology, social work, anthropology are encouraged to apply.  Preferred: Interviewing skills, research experience, multimedia-expertise – i.e. knowledge of video, audio, editing and transcription.

Summer Graduate Research Assistant
(This is an unclassified – student hourly help position)
The Department of Africology is seeking an individual grounded in the field of Africology with research experience and working knowledge of 20th C. African American history to document the history of the Program for Black Studies (now Department of Africology) at UWM from the mid-1960s to the present.
SUPERVISING FACULTY: Professor D. McClure & Professor J. Kirk
SALARY: Commensurate with graduate level and experience (This is an unclassified, student hourly help position)
APPOINTMENT PERIOD: June 1 2012 to August 31, 2012
PERCENT OF TIME: Approximately 10-15 hours per week
JOB SUMMARY: The research assistant will review sources, conduct a literature review and collect documents related to the institutionalization of Africology (Black Studies) nationwide. With the assistance of supervisors, he/she will identify relevant persons, schedule and conduct interviews.  Interviewees will include former students, faculty members, administrators and community activists.  The study will compile relevant documents, a literature review, an annotated bibliography and oral histories of those involved in the development of the Program of Black Studies (now Department of Africology) at UWM.
OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS: Must be a graduate student with at BA or MA, or relevant experience in History, Africology (Black Studies) or related discipline. Preferred: Interviewing skills, research experience, multimedia -expertise – i.e. knowledge of video, audio, editing and/or transcription.

Masters and doctoral graduate students in any field of historical study are invited to submit proposals to present individual research papers at Loyola’s Ninth Annual History Graduate Student Conference. Panel applications and individual papers focusing on borderlands and transnational studies, urban history, gender history, and public history projects are especially encouraged. The goal of this conference is to provide an opportunity for students to gain experience presenting original research papers and receiving feedback from their peers on their work.
Prizes of $150 and $50 will be awarded to the top two conference presentations. Loyola graduate students are ineligible for these monetary awards, but an honorable mention will be given to the top Loyola presentation.
Individual proposals should include: submitter’s name, contact information, institutional affiliation(s), a one page abstract of the paper (with a title), and a brief biographical statement indicating your academic status along with a return address and current e-mail address. Panel proposals should include the above as well as a brief description of the panel itself. Please note that submissions will be accepted as time and space permit. The deadline to defend an MA or PhD thesis for Summer Graduation is: August 6, 2012
The deadline to submit a final, signed thesis for Summer Graduation is: 8/13/12
