"The Encyclopedia of Milwaukee project seeks one or more Project
Assistants for 2012-2013. A multi-year project, The Encyclopedia of
Milwaukee, will be published in print by Northern Illinois University
Press and online through UWM in 2017. The editors are UWM history
faculty members Amanda Seligman and Margo Anderson. Project Assistants
will write entries, conduct research, attend staff meetings, and
assist the editors in developing other content and background material
for the project. Familiarity with the use of primary and secondary
sources in writing history is essential.  Familiarity with
quantitative methods is preferred but not essential.

Appointment will be at an A-basis, 50% level (12 months of work for 20
hours a week). Applicants may be master’s or doctoral students in the
History Department or Urban Studies Programs, or in a related field.
The appointments will begin August 20, 2012 and run through August 19,
2013. If the project’s NEH application is successful, a student
appointed as a PA may be renewed for 2013-2014.

Graduate students appointed as Teaching Assistants in the History
Department may wonder whether they are eligible for this position.
They are. However, it is not possible to hold a 50% PA and 50% TA
position simultaneously. Students appointed as PAs are expected to
resign their TAships for the year. Students pursuing the PhD, the MA
in Urban Historical Studies, or the MA in Public History will not lose
a year of eligibility for a TAship if they accept this position.

Graduate Research Assistant

The Department of Africology is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) needed to assist with research project relating to the Youth and Adult Rites of Passage & Transformation.

SUPERVISING FACULTY: Professor J. Kirk

SALARY: Commensurate with graduate level and experience (This is an unclassified, student hourly help position)

APPOINTMENT PERIOD: June 1 2012 to February 1 2013 (reappointment possible)

PERCENT OF TIME: Approximately 10-15 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY: The research assistant’s primary duties will include 1) literature/media review 2) compiling an annotated bibliography 3) organize Rites of Passage (ROP) data electronically 4) transcribe video interviews with ROP alumni and transfer VHS to DVD’s  5) assist with identifying relevant persons and scheduling interviews  6) assist with planning ROP alumni conference 7) assist with grant application for ROP conference.

OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS: Must be a graduate student with a BA or MA or relevant experience and/or training in African, African American and diaspora studies, cross-cultural studies, urban studies, sociology, social work, anthropology are encouraged to apply.  Preferred: Interviewing skills, research experience, multimedia-expertise – i.e. knowledge of video, audio, editing and transcription.

Summer Graduate Research Assistant

(This is an unclassified – student hourly help position)

The Department of Africology is seeking an individual grounded in the field of Africology with research experience and working knowledge of 20^th C. African American history to document the history of the Program for Black Studies (now Department of Africology) at UWM from the mid-1960s to the present.

SUPERVISING FACULTY: Professor D. McClure & Professor J. Kirk

SALARY: Commensurate with graduate level and experience (This is an unclassified, student hourly help position)

APPOINTMENT PERIOD: June 1 2012 to August 31, 2012

PERCENT OF TIME: Approximately 10-15 hours per week

JOB SUMMARY: The research assistant will review sources, conduct a literature review and collect documents related to the institutionalization of Africology (Black Studies) nationwide. With the assistance of supervisors, he/she will identify relevant persons, schedule and conduct interviews.  Interviewees will include former students, faculty members, administrators and community activists.  The study will compile relevant documents, a literature review, an annotated bibliography and oral histories of those involved in the development of the Program of Black Studies (now Department of Africology) at UWM.

OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS: Must be a graduate student with at BA or MA, or relevant experience in History, Africology (Black Studies) or related discipline. Preferred: Interviewing skills, research experience, multimedia -expertise – i.e. knowledge of video, audio, editing and/or transcription.
