Call for Papers (now due by 7/31/12)--Windy City History Conference

"The University of Illinois at Chicago History Graduate Society announces the fifth annual Windy City Graduate Student History Conference: Navigating New Worlds: Contact, Conflict, and Conquest in the Modern Era. This event will take place at UIC on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

History has been shaped by complex interactions between previously separate individuals and groups. Historians trace the ramifications of these discrete or long-term moments of contact, conflict, and conquest across geographic and social boundaries, and through time, thereby enhancing our understanding of human histories as well as the world that we inhabit today. We are interested in examining the ways in which historical actors responded to new interactions across geographic, spatial, political, social, cultural, and intellectual boundaries. By bringing together scholars exploring wide-ranging themes such as race and ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality, science and technology, material culture, politics, and empire, we hope to engage in productive discussions about how we study and understand the messy interactions that drive historical change.

Submissions for panels or individual papers are welcomed from graduate students at all levels and advanced undergraduates. We welcome scholars whose work focuses on any region or field in modern history (roughly 1500 – present). Please send a 250-word abstract and short curriculum vitae (no more than two pages) to windy.city.con@gmail.com by April 30, 2012 July 31, 2012. For panel proposals, please send a 200-word panel abstract along with paper abstracts and presenters' CVs."

Masters and doctoral graduate students in any field of historical study are invited to submit proposals to present individual research papers at Loyola’s Ninth Annual History Graduate Student Conference. Panel applications and individual papers focusing on borderlands and transnational studies, urban history, gender history, and public history projects are especially encouraged. The goal of this conference is to provide an opportunity for students to gain experience presenting original research papers and receiving feedback from their peers on their work.
Prizes of $150 and $50 will be awarded to the top two conference presentations. Loyola graduate students are ineligible for these monetary awards, but an honorable mention will be given to the top Loyola presentation.
Individual proposals should include: submitter’s name, contact information, institutional affiliation(s), a one page abstract of the paper (with a title), and a brief biographical statement indicating your academic status along with a return address and current e-mail address. Panel proposals should include the above as well as a brief description of the panel itself. Please note that submissions will be accepted as time and space permit. Graduate Student Essay Prize--Michigan Historical Review (due July 2, 2012)

The Michigan Historical Review announces competition for the 2012 Graduate Student Essay Prize. The winning essay will be published in the Review and awarded a cash prize of $1,000.00. The Review accepts essays written by graduate students relating to Michigan and Great Lakes history. We welcome essays on American, Canadian, and midwestern history that directly or indirectly explore important themes related to Michigan's past.  Submissions are due by July 2, 2012.

The Alliance of History Graduate Students has booked the Wisconsin room for 4:00 on Tuesday, April 24.  We are wondering if anyone is interested in presenting any work or research.  Our intention is to give students who haven't done many (or any) conferences a chance to put a line on their CV and get comfortable with presenting in front of a friendly crowd.  If we get some responses we can plan from there, if not we can try find another way to use the room (we are open to suggestions).  If anyone has a paper they could present or is interested at all please email John Terry (jrterry@uwm.edu) as soon as you can.  Thank you!
